The flag of Russia has three horizontal fields in white, blue, and red colors. The Russian tricolor is used as a merchant flag which, according to legend, was created by the Russian tsar Peter the Great while he was in the Netherlands. The tricolor was abolished during the Soviet Union when a red flag with a sickle, hammer, and five-pointed star was used. Later, the tricolor was reinstated.
