The flag of Mexico consists of three vertical fields in green, white, and red colors. In the central white field, there is the coat of arms of Mexico. The coat of arms of Mexico features an eagle on a cactus holding a snake in its beak. According to belief, the leader of the Aztecs was visited in a dream by the god of war, who said that they should settle where they saw an eagle eating a snake. The place where they saw this scene was marshy, in the center of three lakes. By settling in this place, they built the great city of Tenochtitlan.
