Flag of Vatican City

The flag of the Vatican is square in shape and consists of two vertical fields of equal size, in yellow and white colors. The yellow field is located next to the staff when the flag is raised. The flag was adopted on June 7, 1929, the same year when Pope Pius XI signed the Lateran Treaty with Italy, resolving the issue of the Papal States. The flag of the Vatican and the flag of Switzerland are the only two national flags in the world that are square in shape. The flag of the Vatican symbolizes the spiritual authority of the Pope and his independence from any other state.
